1-22“The Sayings of Vafthrudnir” Stanza 38–39
A Life Born from Peace
Who was born from the spit of peace?
In Gylfaginning, the Aesir and Vanir exchange hostages as part of their peace agreement. Njord comes from the Vanir; he did not originally belong to the Aesir. The Aesir send Hoenir in return.
Skaldskaparmal tells of a token of peace. The warring gods met to discuss an agreement, and both sides spat into the same vessel. When it was time to part, they did not want this token to be lost. So, from the spit they had gathered, they created a person.
This was Kvasir. He was so wise that there was no question he could not answer. Kvasir traveled far and wide, sharing his knowledge with people wherever he went.
