Loki Returns to the Feast
How did Loki get a seat after being driven away?
At Aegir's feast, the guests praised the servants for their work. Loki could not bear it. He killed a servant, and the gods drove him into the forest. But Loki came back. As he entered the hall, everyone fell silent.
Loki asked for a seat, but Bragi refused him. So Loki reminded Odin of an old promise. Long ago, the two of them had mingled their blood. They had promised not to drink unless both were served. At Odin's command, Loki was given a seat and a drink.
Loki mocked Bragi for being a coward in battle. Then he turned his insults on Idunn, Gefjon, Odin, Frigg, and Freyja. He told Frigg that he was the reason Baldr would not return. Freyja accused Loki of lying and warned that he would leave in sorrow.

In the Codex Regius, "Loki's Quarrel" comes between "The Lay of Hymir" and "The Lay of Thrym." In the poem, Loki explains why Baldr cannot return. To reflect this, the poem appears here after Baldr's death and before Loki's capture.
