2-26“The Lay of Thrym” Stanza 1–20

Thor Dresses as a Bride

Why did Thor dress as a bride?

Thor wakes to find his hammer missing. He tells Loki it has been stolen. Together they go to borrow Freyja's feather cloak. Loki puts it on and flies away. When he reaches the land of the giants, he meets Thrym.

Thrym reveals that he has hidden the hammer deep underground. He will return it only if Freyja becomes his wife. When Thor hears the news, he asks Freyja to dress as a bride. She grows so angry that the halls of the gods shake.

The gods gather to discuss what to do, and Heimdall has an idea: dress Thor as the bride. Thor objects, afraid the gods will call him unmanly. Loki warns that giants will settle in the gods' realm unless they recover the hammer.

Thor puts on a bridal veil and a great necklace. His clothes hang down to his knees, and keys jingle as he moves. A large jewel adorns his chest. Loki offers to go with him to the land of the giants as his maid.
