The Order of the Stories
How can you follow the stories’ order and find their sources?
This page guides you through the stories of the Edda using 22 scenes as signposts. The stories follow the order of these scenes. This does not always match the order in the Poetic Edda or Snorri’s Edda.
The 2 Eddas often tell the same stories in different orders. Some stories are also spread across separate books. Whenever this page follows a different order from the sources, a short note headed “In the Edda” explains the difference. You can check these notes as you read.
Each story also gives its sources. Look for the source’s Japanese title and its title in the original language. For poems, stanza numbers are included; for Snorri’s Edda, chapter numbers are given. These titles and numbers help you find the exact stanza in a poem or chapter in a book.
